how i feel about kamloops council and other wine dictatorships

Oh my. Our Kamloops City Council certainly seems to like to get a lot of free press…

The issue of whether or not grocery stores can sell wine in Kamloops has remained unresolved for a long time (see this old column). Now, it seems, the matter is resolved and Save On Foods will not be granted the variance they requested to sell BC VQA wines in their store.

Of note is the fact that they shared a back wall with the store they bought the license from last year. And that store was allowed to sell the wine. In basically the same building. But, you know, who’s looking at a map anyways.

Originally, I thought that buying your wine at a grocery store or at a signature liquor store or an independent retailer wasn’t going to matter much to Kamloops wine drinkers.

But, after more contemplating, and seeing how much locally produced product Save On carries, I think that it was a poor choice and we lose in this deal. Of course, we didn’t buy a useless license so we don’t lose as bad as Save On. Jimmy will probably survive, though (which was a deciding factor for some Councillors).

I liked the look of the Kamloops Wine Trail display in another Save On that I saw on twitter this week. And, as a retailer that likes to work with locals, I think Save On would have expanded the selection here in town and done a great job marketing it. We get a lot of travelers through here and they would have certainly taken advantage of the opportunity to buy a bottle with their groceries.

What is done is done (maybe since we do backsies on votes apparently) and we will see what happens with the license purchased. The reasons for the decision were pretty lame and while we don’t lack for liquor stores around here a little diversity would have been nice.

And, for the record, I didn’t shop at Discover Wines often because their selection was limited, since their wines were all from this region and I am, after all, a wine slut.

I’m really disappointed with this vote and since I did shop at Discover Wines I’m doubly disappointed that it’s gone too.

Turns out backsies applied after all! So we will see wine coming soon to our Save On Foods!
